Research Paper Overview

 

Research papers should include the following:

    Title page
    Outline or plan
    Thesis statement (if requested)
    Introduction
    Body
    Conclusion
    In-text citation
    Works Cited page

A research paper is an original paper which results from reading sources, taking notes, outlining ideas, and organizing the information in a written rough draft and then a final paper.

BPHS uses the MLA style for citations.

Works Cited:

    1. The works cited page is arranged alphabetically by author’s last name or  by the first significant word in the title.
    2. Each entry should be single-spaced.
    3. The Works Cited should be double-spaced between each entry.
    4. The lines after the first line of each entry should be indented 5 spaces.

In-text Citations:

In-text citations must be used when you use:

    1. Direct quotes
    2. Ideas that are not your own
    3. Information that is not common knowledge
    4. Statistics

In-text citations usually include author’s last name and page number.

EXAMPLE: The oldest rock outcroppings in Jackson Hole consist of gneiss and schist (Duffy 13).
