Introduction:
This
Treasure Hunt about tides examines the causes of ocean tides and the different
types of tides that occur. The hunt is
meant to be a fun way for students to learn more about this topic than is
normally covered in their science class.
Learners:
The
topic of tides comes up in the fourth grade science curriculum. This Treasure Hunt was designed with fourth
grade in mind, but could be used in Grades 4-8. The reading level on some of the web pages will be challenging to
many 4th graders.
Resources:
Students
will need a computer with Internet access, a printer or pre-printed answer
sheets, and a pen.
NYS Learning Standards
Standard 2: Information Systems- Students
will access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate
technologies.
Standard 4: Science Students will understand
and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the
physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical
development of ideas in science.
English Language Arts:
Standard 1: Language for Information and
Understanding Students will listen, speak, read, and write for information
and understanding. As listeners and readers, students will collect data, facts,
and ideas; discover relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and use
knowledge generated from oral, written, and electronically produced texts. As
speakers and writers, they will use oral and written language that follows the
accepted conventions of the English language to acquire, interpret, apply, and
transmit information.
ISTE
NETS for Students:
Basic operations and concepts: Students are proficient in the use of technology.
Technology research tools: Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect
information from a variety of sources.
Process:
Students will work individually in the computer lab or in pairs in the
classroom. Each student will be given an
answer sheet or instructed to print one.
Students will go on the Internet, using a shortcut or bookmark to go
directly to the Treasure Hunt web site.
Students will then click on each link provided to find the answer to
each question. Answers will be recorded
in complete sentences on the answer sheets.
When the class has completed the Treasure Hunt, answers will be
discussed as a class. The answer sheets
will then be collected.
Evaluation:
Both oral and written responses will be evaluated.
