Diggin’ For New York State Facts

Introduction

This Treasure Hunt was designed to bring students on a journey to discover some of NY State’s historical Treasures.  "This Treasure Hunt was designed as a project within the Capital Region Collaboration/Title III Technology Literacy Challenge Grant."

 

Learners

This Treasure Hunt is designed to fourth grade students studying New York State History in Social Studies.

Resources

The students will need a computer with internet access and Microsoft Word, a disk to copy the Hunt on, and a printer, OR a paper copy of the Hunt and a pencil.

 

NYS Learning Standards

New York State Standards addressed in this hunt are as follows:

English Language Arts:

Standard 1 - Language for Information and Understanding

Students will read, write and speak for information and understanding. As listeners and readers, students will collect data, facts, and ideas; discover relationships, concepts and generalizations; and use knowledge generated from oral, written, and electronically reduced texts. As speakers and writers, they will use oral and written language to acquire, interpret, apply, and transmit information.

 

Standard 3 - Language for Critical Analysis and Evaluation

Students will listen, speak, read, and write for critical analysis and evaluation. As listeners and readers, students will analyze experiences, ideas, information, and issues presented by others using a variety of established criteria. As speakers and writers, they will use oral and written language that follows the accepted conventions of the English language to present, from a variety of perspectives, their opinions and judgments on experiences, ideas, information and issues.

 

Math, Science and Technology:

 

Standard 2 - Information Systems

Students will access, generate, process and transfer information using appropriate technologies.

 

Social Studies:

 

Standard 1 - History of the United States and New York

Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in the history of the United States and New York.

 

ISTE Standards:

 

Technology Foundation Standards for Students

1.     Basic operations and concepts

o        Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.

o        Students are proficient in the use of technology.

2.     Social, ethical, and human issues

o        Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software.

o        Students develop positive attitudes toward technology uses that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity.

o        Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.

o        Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, prepare publications, and produce other creative works.

4.     Technology research tools

o        Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.

o        Students use technology tools to process data and report results.

 

Process

The students will bring this Hunt home on a disk to be opened in Microsoft Word (those students without access will be given a paper copy of the Hunt).  The students will open their browser and access each URL on the Hunt and determine the correct answer for each question by reading the information provided.  Those students without Internet access will be given time in several ways: with a friend, at the library, before or after school, during computer or library time.  The students will have a week to locate the correct answers.  Those students with a printer will print a copy of their answers; those using a paper copy will turn that in for assessment.

 

Evaluation

Evaluation will be on a ten-point scale.  One point will be given for each correct answer.  This Hunt will be used for extra Social Studies credit.
