   Women's Fashion Through the Ages

Throughout history, women's fashion has reflected the values, customs and moral beliefs of the society they lived in. In addition, clothes were a badge identifying  the social class a woman belonged to, thus announcing to the world how she should be treated and how she should behave.

In this unit, you will explore how economic and political events affected what women wore. You will also examine the relationship between the values and fashions of a particular time period.

 

 

By the end of this unit you will be able to:

        make inferences about values that have affected the popularity of fashion styles at various times in history.

        describe the effect of technological developments and discuss how fashion is a reflection of the available technology.

        become familiar with period clothing and understand how it reflected the social and economic status of the wearer.

        compare fashion trends of two time periods and analyze fashion standards in light of changing women's roles.

    draw conclusions about the relation between fashion and social values.

Prerequisite: you should have a basic understanding of United States and Global History.

 

 

Tasks: before you begin look at the grading rubrics for each task.

Grading Rubrics for each task:

 

 

Task One:

   On a piece of drawing paper, design an outfit you would like to wear. The outfit can be for any purpose - party, work, sport activities, play, sleep, or just for "hanging out". You can use your own drawing skills or make a collage of pictures  from fashion magazine.

When you are done, consider the following questions:       

        What gave you the idea for this particular outfit?

        Why do you like its style?

        What material(s) would you use to make it?

        What would be the price tag you would put on your creation?

        What does your choice of design say about you and your values?

 

 

 

Task Two:

    Explore each of the time periods listed, by using the links provided. As you examine each site, think about the political, social, economic and technological conditions that influenced what women wore in each time period.

      Describe and identify what you liked about the fashion of each time period and what you did not like.

      Identify one item of women's wear that is no longer in use today and explain why it is not (feel free to find other links using various Search Engines).

Task Three:

        From the time periods you have just examined, choose the two you found   particularly  interesting.  Take notes.  While taking notes, consider the following questions. Be aware that, depending on your choice of time periods, not all questions will be relevant. 

      How much do the clothes reflect the women's lifestyle and /  or occupation?

        How do the clothes reflect the women's social class?

        What was the impact of technology on the manufacturing and style?

      Is there any evidence of political influence on women' such as laws that would directly influence the materials or style used?

        Based on the fashions you have examined, what can you       infer about the values of each time period?

        That changes have taken place in the roles women played in society?

 

Note: Remember you might have to do some research of your own to find out what class differences existed in the time periods you choose.
